I've thought of a good way that you could loads and loads of IDs - although it'd be a bit of a slog.

How about checking the Manchester Evening News archives @ Manchester Central Library for obituary pictures. Then cross-referencing to the book. It should be relatively easy - although not quick - to get positive IDs.

And , please note I am NOT volunteeering to help. Much too much on my plate.

I don't know, Bernard. Never used that archive as the Evening News is sort of off my research patch.

However, my guess (based on looking at other newspapers) is that reports of deaths are likely to be on roughly the same page in each issue. A bit like you always know the sport pages are going to be at the back.

So it should be relatively easy to whizz through the microfilms. And you are looking at less than 2000 editions

I have just located this thread and wonder what book/photo you are referring to? I am interested in Sgt. C.E.Entwistle, 19th Batt., B.Co., plate vi, 2nd row 3rd left. I feel sure this must be my great uncle Charles Egerton Entwistle who died 22 March 1918 serving as Lieutenant 8th Batt., Manchester Regiment during Ludendorff's spring offensive and was originally buried at Marchelepot. Any info would be marvellous. I do have a photo of him in the uniform of the Manchesters.

hes known to be buried in roye new british cemetary,originally he was buried in marchelpot british cemetary but there was no time to mark his grave due to the german offensive,theres a special memorial for him and 12 others known or believed to be buried in the cemetary.
charles was born in scopwick in lincolnshire.
joseph was the eldest of the two,i have a strong feeling that joseph was also commissioned
