Don't know if this is just a spelling mistake, but my Grandads entry in the London Gazette relating to his commission gives the letters, R.E. after his name.Does anyone know what the letters stand for if correct, taking into consideration he was in the Gordons.

Royal Engineers. It was not unusual for rankers to be commissioned into other regiments or corps on commissioning.
