Help! My wife's Grandfather, who was Czech, fought in the Austro/Hungarian army. He served in the Italian Alps, ( Dolomites ). Did these soldiers receive campaign or service medals like the Brits 14 14/15 star, war and victory medals? I know they lost, but was any medal issued to all and if so, would anyone have a photo or picture of the above? Thank you, Chris.

Hello Chris
Yes. They could have received a number of awards for service during WW1 - gallantry/merit awards, wound medal, and another for 1 years' frontline service and participation in a great battle.
Austro-Hungary ceased to exist with Versailles.
The Austrians instituted a campaign medal in the early 1930s, as did the Hungarians.
There was, however, a great deal of reciprocity between these two nations and Germany. Most A-H soldiers were eligible for the German Honour Cross (their national campaign medal) and both Austrian and A-H campaign medals, subject to qualification and application.
Have a look on "Hendryk's Medal Corner" for information and piccies. Try Wehrmacht Awards for the German medals.

Hi Chris,
The only 'standard' campaign medal would be the Karl Truppenkreuz (troop Cross). A quick google search should give you a photo. They cost roughly $10-15 and are rather common. Both Austria and Hungary issued their own WWI service medals after the war, again both are pretty common and affordable.
As Richard stated above, other awards were for wounds, bravery, merit etc. and not truly campaign medals.
