Chris,

I visited Tunisia a couple of years ago and visited a couple of places identified in the book 'Tunisia The Rough Guide'.

Visited the CWGC Cemetery at Enfidaville, really strange experience to walk around the beautifully kept and tended area with the 'wailing or calling to prayer' from the local mosque echoing around, very haunting.

A short distance away is the hilltop village of Takrouna, which if I recall correctly was taken by the NZ Maori forces. It is well worth a visit as well but the local Berber people were very 'pushey and demanding' in their manner.

On the road between Enfidaville and Takrouna is a French Militery Cemetery, not as smart and as well kept as the CWGC but worth a visit, each grave has a French helmet placed on it.

In the south of the country you have the remains of the Mareth defensive line from WW2, also there is a very small museum, unfortunatly i didn't get to visit this as I was on a family holiday so cannot tell you more.

In the south we visited the Troglodite village where Starwars was filmed, whilst there we toured an old womans Cave home, I was astonished to see that she had a WW2 landmine on display as an ornament and was using WW2 petrol cans around her dwelling. She apparently just found found them locally in the desert!

A strange country but a wonderful experience, please let me know how your trip turns out as I would love to go back there.
Regards and best wishes,
Scottie.

Scottie

thanks for the tips - Are any of the sites anywhere near Sousse as that is where I will be staying?

Chris,

i think I am correct in saying that none of the locations Terry has posted are close to Sousse, i think the nearest is approx 100kms away.

We stayed at Port El Kantaoui just north of Sousse, we hired a hire car for the day which enabled us to get to Enfidaville and have a look around.

If you get the chance have a look around the Medina a walled market area, a wonderful experience with a hint of mystery/fear about it, my son even bought a genuine Rolex for £5 off a trader (Well the man said it was genuine!) Youexpected to see Micheal Palin walk around the corner doing one of his shows.

If you wanted to borrow my Rough Guide (approx 3 years old) you are more than welcome, just PM me with your H/A and I will pop it in the post for you, think I have a map somewhere as well.

Regards,
Scottie.
