The name of John Farlington appears on the Dewsbury War Memorial and also in Our Lady & St Paulinus Church Memorial which records his death as November 1914.

There is no record on the CWGC or SDGW, nor does he ever seem to have served, as a Medal Roll check has proved fruitless.

Any ideas ??

Interseting but may be lots of possibilities for starters

If Royal Navy or reserve would not be on SDGW or national archives and may have been missed by or not recorded with CWGC as missing.

a civilian not covered by CWGC charter?

Our local memorial does not specify service or regiment does yours specify he was army? Perhaps the local papers archive can help.

I have found some names that come from 100's of miles from the memorial and can only surmise some family member (maybe sister etc) has moved nearby.

Fred may have the answer above.

However, if your man did not serve abroad and was killed in the UK, he would have no medal entitlment to appear on the MICs.

I'd also agree with Fred.

There are no entries for "John Farlington" on the 1901 census. The John Farrington mentioned above lived in Preston with his parents , a brother and four unmarried sisters, aged between 6 and 18.

If the inscription surname is incorrect and this is our man, then any of his sisters could have married somebody over the border in Yorkshire and had his name added to the memorial.

Local newspaper archives for casualty lists?

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies. I should have said that a group of us have scrutinised all the old archives of the then and now local newspapers.

We have researched 107 men on the Church Memorial and this one is the only one we can find no trace of. He must have had some connection with Dewsbury.

Experts among you will know that if the CWGC are aware of an alias or "Served As" they will cross reference the names. One of the men we found enlisted under his Mother's maiden name and the CWGC seem unaware of his true identity.

If John Farlington did similar, I appear to have no chance. Any more ideas gratefully welcomed.

Bumping this up in the faint hope something may be found.

Having looked at census results and Free BMD, he does not appear to have been born in England.

Could he have been a civilian death on seagoing vessel which was sunk or killed in a Zeppelin raid.

No "John Farlington" on the 1911 census, and the chap from CWGC is listed as serving.

But perhaps of more interest is John William Farrington, aged 18, living at 6, Barnsley Road, Old Mill Monk Bretton, in the Barnsley RD.

If you PM me an email address, I'll send you the census image if you're interested
