For those interested in the Eastern front, here you have a picture showing Russian soldiers in a trench.

Date of publication is September 1918, yet, due to the events of the Russian Revolution, it is not unlikely that the actual date could be an earlier one. No exact location is given, and the caption (roughly translated) reads "Second wing of attack of a Russian army, waiting for signals" (to attack). I wonder if if is that so, if it wasn't a bit hazardous for the two gentlemen to stand above the parapet.

Of course this is purely a guess, but this could be a communication trench on a reverse slope. A fairly safe place to hold support troops and neither side of the trench exposed to direct fire. A howitzer shell though.....nasty.

The dangerous"over the top" situation of the two soldiers seems plausible if in a communication trench, yet all seem to be having a little rest, so the place where they are going is not too clear.

The photo doesnn't come from any specialized magazine, it appeared in a contemporary Spanish magazine with miscellaneous contents of which I have a couple of issues. There are some images and articles related to the Great War, in the international news section, but they are not too extensive.

This picture, in fact, just appeared with the caption and bore no relationship with the articles next to it.
