Further to last year's postings with regard to Lone Tree Crater, I have now received the following from the Reverend Smith:

...........I visited The Pool of Peace on December 11th:

1. I did not find the site to be overgrown in the sense that it is a naturally wild environment
2. The day I visited the ground was hard because of frost but I can see that in milder weather it might well be muddy
3. The Toc H sign has been vandalised and was removed to Talbot House for safe keeping pending remedial works
4. I saw no evidence of litter or rubbish but am told that anglers do sometimes use the site and tend to be fairly untidy.
(Angling is not actually permitted but the site is difficult to supervise)
5. The stainless steel figure is at Talbot House as above
6. There is no outer rim footpath other than a footpath leading from the lay-by to a German Bunker at the rear of the crater

I understand from colleagues at Talbot House that funding has been identified and work will begin at the site during 2006. The main area of concern is to ensure that the entrance is safe and that the paving is renewed.

Yours

Geoffrey Smith

It is good to see at 3 & 5 above, these items are in safekeeping at Talbot House, however the Reverend's general observations I feel, do not demonstrate a great deal of enthusiasm.
Or perhaps it is just my scepticism!

Hello,

The path from the gate to the pool is OK. No more mud. But there are still a lot of works to. Maintenance : Trees and strawberries ( the jugle) next winter? I hope.

I was there in October and all the work appeared to have been completed. Three viewing dias have been installed and the path was in decent condition. I was perplexed by an abadoned wader! But if fishermen use it that would explain it! Personally I appreciated the "wild" state of the far edge gave the pool more of a peaceful air. After all we have Lochnager to appreciate the grim reality.

But now, the province of West-Flanders is in charge of the Pool of Peace. No longer Talbot house.

Looks ok to me now.

Hi Glyn,

There was nobody fishing at the pool of peace I don't even know if it is allowed.

Just down the road at the kruistraat krators there were some french people fishing at the crators.
It did say on the gate that a permit was needed to fish here.

I would have liked to have asked the fisherman some questions but to my regret the only thing I can say
in french is "can I have a can of coke please" this I learned so that I don't suffer of thirst while driving in France.

On the photo some french enjoying themselves with some rods

Our tours visit the pool of peace (pardon the pun) most days. Many times we see fishermen there!

Hi Glyn, when visiting the Pool of Peace "out of Hours" so to speak,i have seen some rather Large Common Carp and Orfe feeding on or near the Surface of the Water.I have often contemplated dangling a Line in there myself. biggrin.gif .

To Chris Baker,

The province of West-Flanders - is in charge -- for 66 years --- they pay a small sum of money --- but the province of West - Flanders --- do maintenance, invests, etc. Talbot House is not able to invest... So the province of West-Flanders do everything. They are "special owners" for 66 years, (but they can't sell !!!) after this 66 years Talbot House is still the owner.
