Hi All,

I'm trying to find out more about a couple of blokes:

A Major Guy Warden - the last known address for him was 28 Lewisham Road NW5 (London) in April 1918. He was in the Buffs (East Kent Regt.) at Loos in Sept. 1915. Does anyone know what happened to him after the war?

This one is a curly one. All I know is that he again was probably in the Buffs, sold a house in Elsworthy Road (London) shortly before 15/3/16 and was a member of the Golfers' Club, Whithall Court, SW... (London). He was married & had probably been wounded at some stage (likely Loos) as he was due to attend a Medical Board the week of 15/3/16.

I know its not much to go on, but maybe someone could at least point me in the right direction to find the info.

There is a file at the NA on Major G Warden - dates covered 1914-1921 and 1931. Reference WO339/8917.

These are physical files that can be ordered and viewed at Kew. Not online though.

The fact that there was correspondence in 1931 probably means an address at that time.

Hi Pat

Further to Steves message, can I add that you are able to order that info ONLINE from the National Archives website. I have just put in that reference from Steve to see if it available to order online and it does come up.

So, how you do it is you go onto the website, look for the tab at the top that says "Search The Archives" and hover your mouse over that. A dropdown list appears. Click on "the Catalogue".

On the top left side you will see a box - enter that code WO339/8917 into the search box and click go.

The file details will appear - then you can choose to "Request This" from the top right tab. Follow instructions from there as to how to order - it costs £6.50 (and the maximum pages they will send is 5 pages) and if you order before 1pm you get the results back before 5pm that day. On the order form there is a box for extra info so you can write in there the person's details that you have. Not sure how long this file is - but if you say you want the first 5 pages and "please advise how large the file is" - they will usually let you know by email when they send your order how many pages in total there are. You might find it's a 20 page document and you will have to decide if you want to pay out for each 5 pages. Then again, it may only be a 2 page doc!

I've used this service (Digital Express) a few times for war diary entries and it's great - saves a trip to Kew.

There are 59 pages in the file. Expensive

Thank you all for the info. I'll definately look into it.

Mick - what a surprise finding you here again!

Steve - Do the gazette entries only cover officers? Do they mention discarge or just promotion/demotion & decorations?

Athenalaz - I'll see if I can get my dad to go up to Kew & have a look. Bit difficult for me as I'm in Oz! May be cheaper than "buying" fifty-odd pages.
