Hi All

Can anyone tell me how long it took for a new recruit to be issued a service Number, days or weeks. I found a chap buried at Shrewsbury, who's rank is listed as recruit, this could mean that the poor chap died with-in days of joining up before a Number was issued to him ?

Thanks in advance

May I ask what unit this recruit is from? I've come acoss the same thing (rank = recruit), from a guy at the Inns of Court.

Hi Racing Teapots

He is listed as King's Shropshire Light Infantry.

Just out of interest, a search of Soldiers Died in the Great War shows just eleven men with that rank, all in the RE's and all with service numbers.

'recruit' very rare: service number issued at attestation, which itself was very soon after rudimentary tests of fitness and eligibility. Flash to bang often only 24 hours.
