For those who remember that I was looking for episode 1 (of 25) of the old (1977) series wings....
I found it.
Here is a short snippet that may give you an idea of why I like it. (This is the actual airplane they are restoring over at

Was it really 1977 when it came out. Watching the video clip it all came flooding back, Sergent Farmer, Captain Triggers etc.
As a fourteen year old esential viewing along with the Sweeny at the time.

Remember friday nights with my bro watching Wings, cracking prog. We still talk about it now!.
They always came back from flying with oil covering their faces, except where the goggles had been.
Always imagined the make up people with a knapsack sprayer full of old sump oil spaying the actors until the director was happy with the effect!

Damn it, made me re-read the above book which had been fetering at the bottom of the bookcase. A cracking series.

I was 14/15 at the time and absolutely loved this series and went mad if anyone spoke at home when it was on! As far as I know it's the only series ever shown on British tv about the RFC (unless anyone on the forum knows any different). Is it available on dvd?

I've never seen it, but I hopefully will very shortly.
Forum rules probably prevent me from saying how I'm getting hold of a copy...

Well I hope you get to watch it too! It would be nice if the BBC was bombarded with requests - they might finally get the idea. I must admit I am daunted by the task of creating a set of DVD's sans ads etc. Still it is such a good series. From time to time I might post other snippets.

BTW this is actually the 2nd book.

As for a DVD....I'll keep you posted if anyone's interested. Need to actually get the complete series first! (Fingers crossed I should have it by tonight)

You could very soon become my new bestfriend!! It would be great to see this series again. I remember watching it but was too young to have any memory of it.

Remember it very well from my very late teens and would love to see it again. Cast members have all progressed well, one of them having flown all the way to Ambridge!

I remember this series and although I was only 11 in 1977, I never missed an episode. Hard to believe that it was 29 years ago. If this ever comes out on DVD I'll be placing an advance order!

Yes, the newly-wed, socially-aware Oliver. I can't decide whether his flight to Ambridge is a downturn in an otherwise successful career, or genteel retirement.
I can still picture his 'Wings' interview at the War Office, where the RFC officer said "Hussars? Well, I won't ask if you can ride". I wonder if the casting director of The Archers said the same thing.
He seems to be playing the same character in Ambridge as he did in Wings.

30 years ago.....I still can't believe it. I assume it was too big-budget for the BBC to keep it going. If i recall correctly, it was supposed to go to several series, but didn't make it.

I think it was meant to go for three series all up - it went for two. Just getting better and better, then left us hungry for more. It actually won a few awards for historical dramas, accuracy etc.
Even David Boddington who made the models and did the flying doesn't have a complete original set. And I believe the BBC can't find the originals in its archives (not that they are not there just they can't find them). Stll it's nice to know some of us have the set! (Even if in various qualities!)

Well, I now have twelve episodes in not-very-good quality. I'll probably start trying to convert them to DVD next week sometime...
Looking forward to seeing this now!

Great news. BBC have been working away on the archive material for some time.
As indeed have we. The replica used in the series will be back in the skies early in the New Year if all goes well!

Bl00dy h*ll, that's the best camouflage I've seen, looks as if it's invisible in parts!!!
Seriously, the complete 25 episodes on a 7 disc set at £25.99 looks a winner!!

I too would buy the DVD if/when it comes out. I have a "rough" copy of all episodes. (see
http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...=131211&hl= Hope this doesnt break any forum rules)
It brought back many good memories and also showed a few times how the memory can play tricks on you, remembering things differently to how they actually were!
