Information on HENDLE, 2/1792 Gunner, Ernest Alfred, New Zealand Field Artillery, 5th Reinforcements, 2nd Battery, 2nd Brigade, for you.

This file is 16 pages of photocopy print out from microfilm. In total there are nine documents (1 to 9) of interest. The order of the document / information below is in the order of the files. Abbreviations are as recorded on the file.

This man’s family is interesting because it seems that six sons all served in WW1. Three of the six never returned home: Ernest Alfred Hendle (2/1792) died of disease on 18 September 1915 in Malta, William George Hendle (8/2274) was killed in France on 27 September 1916 and Leonard Hendle (2/49) was killed in France on 10 April 1916. Ernest Campbell Hendle, Frederick Hendle and George Hendle seemed to have survived the war.
Leonard Hendle and William George Hendle both served in the New Zealand Samoan Advance force before going to Egypt and on to other theatres of war.

As mentioned there is a photo of this man in the following New Zealand newspaper of the time: New Zealand Free Lance October 8th 1915, page 8.

Overview

Ernest Alfred Hendle was born in Kaiwarawara, Wellington, North Island, New Zealand on 24 May 1889.

He underwent his medical examination on 6 April 1915 (place not given) and attested at Trentham, on 7 April 1915. On enlistment he joined the New Zealand Field Artillery 5th Reinforcements, 2nd Battery, 2nd Brigade.

His ‘apparent age' on enlistment was 26 years.

Ernest Alfred Hendle was a ‘painter by ‘occupation’ working for A W Palmer, Kaiwarawara. Ernest was single. His next of kin was Mr William and Mrs Eliza Agnes Hendle 2 Pickering Terrace Kaiwarawara, Wellington, New Zealand.

Ernest Alfred Hendle’s medical description on enlistment was that he was 5 feet 8 ¾ inches tall and weighed 10 st 10 lb. The condition of his teeth was described as ‘sufficient’. His complexion was described as dark; colour of eyes brown and colour of hair brown. His religious profession was Church of England.

He left Wellington, New Zealand on HMNZT No 24 (Maunganui) as part of the 2,299 5th reinforcements. Prior to leaving New Zealand he was inoculated against typhoid on 2 May 1915 and again on board the transport (date stamp illegible.)

He arrived in Egypt on 24 July 1915. He was taken on strength of the 2nd Battery at Anzac on 13 August 1915. Barely twenty days later on 2 September 1915 he was sent to hospital at Anzac suffering from enteric fever and from here was sent to Malta where he died of enteric at 12.15 am on the 17th September 1915, in St George’s Hospital. Ernest Hendle was buried the same day in Pieta Cemetery in grave No 2, row No 11b. (Note that the death date is in the Base Records letter to Ernest’s mother below is different from that recorded in the list and the file – 18th September 1915.)

One wonder’s why his mother would be sent a letter on 3rd January 1916 starting with the words “It will be of interest to you to learn that advice has been received from the military authorities at the front that the above named solder (2/1792 E A Hendle) died of Enteric at ….” This was her son!

Information on James Hume, Private 10/1263 Wellington Infantry, 7th Wellington West Coast Company, for you.

This file is 17 pages of photocopy print out from microfilm. In total there are seven documents (1 to 7) of interest. The order of the document / information below is in the order of the files. Abbreviations are as recorded on the file.

Overview

James Hume was born in Glossop, Derbyshire, England on 26th April 1889.

He underwent his medical examination on 13th October 1914 at Palmerston North, New Zealand and attested at Trentham, on 26th October 1914. On enlistment, which is dated 20 October 1914, he joined the Wellington Infantry, 7th Wellington West Coast Company. His service reckons from 26th October 1914.

His ‘declared age' on enlistment was 25 years 5 months.

James was a ‘labourer’ by occupation’ working for Mr Alford, Shannon, North Island New Zealand. James was single. While his legal next of kin is recorded as Mr William Hume (father) first at 29 Charlestown Glossop Derby England and then c/o Mrs H Mison 22 Dickson Rd Blackpool England, the file also features in place of his father Mrs Lizzie Watson Bennett (sister) 33 Charlestown Glossop Derbyshire England.

James Hume’s medical description on enlistment was that he was 5 feet 5¼ inches tall and weighed 150 lb. The condition of his teeth was described as “good.” He had a distinctive small mole on his left fore arm. His complexion was described as fair; colour of eyes grey and colour of hair brown. His religious profession was Anglican.

While his departure from New Zealand is not recorded on the file but it is almost certain to be on one of the three transports (Verdala (no 13), Willochra (No 14) or the Knight of Garter (no 15) carrying the 2nd reinforcements, which left NZ on 14 December 1914 and arrived at Suez on 28 January 1915. We know that James Hume was in Zeitoun, Egypt on 17 March 1915 because he was admonished for breaching orders. James Hume would have arrived off Gaba Tepe via the ‘Achaia’ (which carried the Wellington West Coast Company) at about 1 pm on 25th April 1915 and he would have landed about 3.30 am on 26th April 1915. James would have seen a lot of action on Gallipoli – Plugge’s Plateau, Courtney Post, Quinn’s Post, Krithia, Chunuk Bair prior to his evacuation for sickness in August 1915. Unfortunately his file doesn’t record these details and more checking would be required to validate this view.

However, we know that on 12 August 1915 James Hume was sent sick to hospital on the Dardanelles and on 15 August 1915 he was diagnosed with diarrhoea and was transferred from the Hospital Ship ‘Guildford Castle’ to the ‘Andania’. He was transported to Malta where he died from dysentery on 22 August 1915. He is buried at Pieta Cemetery Malta Plot A. Row IX. Grave 3. He was 26 years old.

He had survived over three months on Gallipoli.

He arrived at Zeitoun, Egypt on 26 March 1915 and Gallipoli on 6 May 1915. He would have been at the 2nd Battle for Krithia and on returning to Anzac he was wounded on 5 June 1915. His wounds were caused by ‘by a bomb to his right side and a bullet’ resulting in paralysis to his “ lower extremities.” Horrible!! He was taken by Hospital ship to Malta where he arrived on 20 June 1915, and was reported dangerously ill on 23 June 1915. He died of wounds on June 27 1915 at Andrews Hosp Malta and was buried in Pieta Military Cemetery.

Information on LABRUM, 6/1601, Gunner, William Joseph New Zealand Field Artillery 2nd Battery for you. (NOTE the regimental number uses the prefix ‘6’ not ‘2’. This man transferred from the Canterbury Infantry Battalion to the New Zealand Field Artillery and his number was changed to ‘2/1601A’ initially and then reverted to his original number of 6/1601.)

This file is 20 pages of photocopy print out from microfilm. In total there are nine documents (1 to 9) of interest. The order of the document / information below is in the order of the files. Abbreviations are as recorded on the file.

Overview

William Joseph Labrum was born in ‘Topaki’, New Zealand on 21st Aug 1890. (I have no idea where Topaki is – perhaps one of the pals knows!)

He underwent his medical examination on 8 December 1914, place not given, and enlisted on 22 December 1914 at Trentham. On enlistment he initially joined, as a private, the Canterbury Infantry Battalion – 3rd reinforcements. On 3 April 1915 he transferred from the Canterbury Infantry Battalion to the New Zealand Field Artillery 2nd Battery and was given the regimental number ‘2/1601A’ and rank of ‘gunner’. (This transfer is also recorded on file as taking place on 14 December 1914 before he formally attested on 22 December 1914.) Prior to enlisting he recorded his prior military experience as a member of the 16th (Waikato) Regiment and 6th (Hauraki) Regiment.

His ‘declared and apparent age' on enlistment was 25 years.

William Labrum was a ‘farm hand’ by occupation’ working for someone called Mr C W Ross Walla, Walton New Zealand. William was single. His next of kin is recorded as his friend: Ethel May Portland Walton Rotorua Line. His father, Mr T A Labrum is listed as c/o K S Caldwell Esq Solicitor (Father) Huntley – which sounds rather intriguing.

William Labrum’s medical description on enlistment was that he was 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 151 lb. The condition of his teeth was described as “good.” His complexion was described as medium; colour of eyes brown and colour of hair brown. His religious profession was Anglican.

William was inoculated against typhoid on 31 January 1915 and vaccinated again on 4 and 9 March 1915.

He left New Zealand on HMNZT No 18 (Tahiti) along with 1,719 3rd reinforcement troops on two other transports on 14 February 1915. He arrived at Zeitoun, Egypt on 26 March 1915 and Gallipoli on 4 August 1915 where he was taken on strength of NZFA 2nd Battery on 13 August 1915.

On 1 September 1915 he was sent to hospital at Anzac and from there on 5 September he was transferred to the Hospital Ship ‘Maheno’ and again on the same day to the Hospital Ship ‘Nile’, which transported him to Malta where he disembarked on 8 September 1915. On Malta at St John’s Hospital he was variously described as suffering from diarrhoea (8 September 1915) and dysentery (10 September 1915). However, the Commandant Malta, described William Labrum’s death on 2 December 1915 as “died heart failure following malaria.”

William had survived 28 days on Gallipoli and a further 91 days before his death.

Information on LARKINS, 8/891 Private, Alfred, Otago Infantry Battalion - 4th Otago Company for you.

While there are 18 pages on this file with 8 files (1 – 8) of interest, the file is very poor quality as it is very faded with duplication galore! It is the worst I’ve examined to date in terms of quality i.e. lack thereof! The order of the document / information below is in the order of the files. Abbreviations are as recorded on the file.

Overview

Alfred Larkins was born in Careys Bay, Port Chalmers, South Island, New Zealand (near Dunedin) on 24 May 1894. (His file actually has two dates for his birth - 21 and 24 May 1894 – I’ve chosen the 24 May 1894 because on the attestation file this date has a tick against it. I’m sure one of the pals could check the actual date of birth for you to be 100% certain.)

He underwent his medical examination on 13 August 1914; place not given but very likely to be Dunedin, and he attested on 23 August 1914 at Dunedin. On enlistment he joined, as a private, the Otago Infantry Battalion (4th Company). Prior to enlisting he recorded his prior military experience as a member of the A Company, Coast Defence, Port Chalmers - 4th Otago Regt.

His ‘apparent age' on enlistment was 20 years and 3 months.

Alfred Larkins was a ‘labourer’ by occupation’. He was single. His next of kin is recorded as Mrs A Larkins (M) C/0 PO Box Port Chalmers and Alfred W Larkins (F) Lower Harbour St Port Chalmers. (Note second initial of father’s name on file looks very like a ‘W’ not ‘N’ as shown on nominal roll.)

Alfred Larkins medical description on enlistment was that he was 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 9 stone 12 lb. The condition of his teeth was described as “upper good, lower fair.” His complexion was described as fair; colour of eyes light brown and colour of hair light. His religious profession was not recorded.

According to the NZEF War Diary (published 1915, page lxxxiv) he left Wellington, New Zealand (leaving initially from Port Chalmers) on HMNZT No 5 (Ruapehu) along with 8,444 Main Body troops on 10 transports. He arrived at Alexandria, Egypt on 3 December 1914 and left Egypt 12 April 1915 on the transport ‘Annaberg’ for Mudros, Lemnos and landed on Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He would have been in action on the Suez Canal in February 1915, at Anzac, Cape Helles (2nd battle for Krithia) and would have just arrived back at Anzac on 18 May 1915 to be admitted to the No 11 Casualty Clearing Station at Anzac suffering from dysentery and rheumatism. His condition was such that he was sent from Gallipoli to Malta where he died from enteric fever on 20 July 1915.

Alfred Larkins had survived 23 days on Gallipoli and a further 63 days before his death.

Information for you on LUKEY, 6/1610 Private, Frank William Canterbury Infantry Battalion 3rd reinforcements.

There are 20 pages on this file with 8 files (1 – 8) of interest. The order of the document / information below is in the order of the files. Abbreviations are as recorded on the file.

Overview

Frank William Lukey was born in Waikari, South Island New Zealand on 12 October 1892.

He underwent his medical examination on 14 December 1914; place not given, and he attested on 20th December 1914 at Trentham. On enlistment he joined, as a private, the Canterbury Infantry Battalion 3rd reinforcements. Prior to enlisting he recorded his prior military experience as a member of the Territorials 13th North Canterbury.
Note that while he attested on 20 December 1914 one of his files has him enlisted on 12 December 1914 and his service reckons from the same date.

His ‘apparent age' on enlistment was 22 years.

Frank Lukey was a ‘farmer by occupation’ working for his father Francis William Clark Lukey at Morden, Waikari North Canterbury, New Zealand. He was single. His next of kin is recorded as his father.

Frank Lukey’s medical description on enlistment was that he was 5 feet 5 1/8 inches tall and weighed 147 lb. He had a distinctive scar on front right thigh. His complexion was described as dark; colour of eyes light brown and colour of hair black. His religious profession was Church of England.

He left New Zealand on 14 February 1915 with the 3rd reinforcements (1,719 troops) on HMNZT 17 (‘Maunganui’) and arrived in Suez on 26 March 1915. He was inoculated against typhoid prior to leaving New Zealand on 24 January 1915 and again on 13 March 1915 on board the transport. While on board the transport he spent 13 days in hospital sick (nature of illness not given) and made a “complete recovery” just prior to arriving in Suez on 26 March 1915. However, for reasons not contained in his file on 12 June 1915 he was attached to the strength of the New Base depot at Mustapha and it was not until 9 July 1915 that he embarked on SS Minnewaska for Gallipoli. He rejoined his unit on 14 July 1915. On 16 August 1915 he was admitted to St Andrews hospital in Malta suffering from pneumonia, described as “dangerously ill” on 18th Aug and he died on 20 August 1915. He was buried the same day in the Pieta Cemetery Malta (grave no not available).

Frank Lukey had survived about 30 days on Gallipoli prior to his sickness evacuation to Malta.

I thought I’d give you information on one of your last men on the list.

Information on Private Robin James WORLEY, 10/2381, Wellington Infantry Battalion, 17th Ruahine Co “B” Coy 4th Reinforcements for you.

There are 19 pages on this file with 9 files (1 – 9) of interest. The order of the document / information below is in the order of the files. Abbreviations are as recorded on the file. I have a photograph of this man, which I will send you.

Overview

Robin James Worley was born in Reigate, Surrey, England on 7 December 1890.

He underwent his medical examination on 13 January 1915; place not given, and he attested on 15th February at Trentham. Robin Worley’s medical description on enlistment was that he was 5 feet 4¾ inches tall and weighed 126 lb. The condition of his teeth was described as “good.” His complexion was described as fair; colour of eyes, blue and colour of hair yellow. His religious profession was congregational.

His ‘declared age' on enlistment was 25 years.

Robin Worley was a ‘farmer by occupation’ working for himself, at Eiffelton, an area near Ashburton, Canterbury South Island, New Zealand. He was single. His recorded next of kin was his father Mr C Worley (father) and Mrs Fannie Worley Priorymead Park Lane Reigate Surrey England.

Prior to enlisting he gave his prior military experience as being in the Officers Training Corps at Reigate and lists service on Soames Island. The latter is situated in Wellington Harbour New Zealand and was a quarantine station and prison for aliens during WW1.

On enlistment he joined Wellington Mounted Rifles B squadron 5th reinforcements and had the regimental number 11/1245 but on 15 March 1915 he transferred to B Coy 5th reinforcements and was given the regimental number 10/2381. Then on 13 April 1915 he transferred again to the Wellington Infantry Battalion, 17th Ruahine Coy and became part of the 4th reinforcements. Whether these transfers were made to meet any desire he had to speed up his transport from New Zealand to fight is hard to say but it worked. He left New Zealand on 17 April 1915 with the 4th reinforcements (2,254 troops) on HMNZT 21 (‘Willochra’) and arrived in Suez on 25 May 1915. (OC Troops Major Childs, Ship’s Master R Neville). He was inoculated against typhoid prior to leaving New Zealand at Trentham camp on 15 March 1915 and revaccinated on 16 May 1915 on board his transport.

On the day he arrived in Egypt he completed two short form of wills on 25 May 1915 in which he states “in the event of my death I give to my mother Mrs Fannie Worley all articles and money found on my person and all deferred pay from the New Zealand Government.”

He joined the Wellington Infantry Battalion at Anzac Cove on 28 July 1915 from Egypt. Eleven days later on 8 August 1915 in the attack on Chunuk Bair he received gun shot wounds to his right shoulder and arm and was admitted on 11 August 1915 to the 16th Casualty Clearing Station. From here the Hospital Ship ‘Valdivia’ took him to Malta where he was admitted to hospital on 20 August 1915.

He died of cardiac failure, following wounds received in action on August 28th 1915.
