I just found an interesting article in Bulgarian wartime (1918) magazin "Otechestwo". There is a description of the burial of two British pilots, whose plane was shot down over the position of the Bulgarian 58th Infantry regiment near Doiran on 24th June 1918.
The author describes how the two British servicemen were buried with full honors, regimental band playing "Kol slaven.." (traditionally a burial musik with which Bulgarian servicemen fallen in action are buried), a round of miltary "last salute", as we call it (a ceremonial platoon emptying their rifles in honor of the fallen), and a prayer by the regimental Orthodox priest for the souls of the two men. According to the author the name of one of the pilots was poruchik (that corresponds to the British rank of 1st lieutenant) Kans Austins Jeack (?) - or at least that was how a simple Bulgarian soldier carved his name on the wooden crest. The name, I am sure, in English must have sounded differently. The other pilot's name could not be established, as his ID papers were not found. The additional inscription on both graves was "A pilot of the English army, who was killed in action on 24th June 1918. May his soul rest in peace."
The graves were situated in the cemetery of the 58th Infantry regiment located just north of the village of Pobreg. In 1920-ies the cemetery was deliberately destroyed by the Serbian authorities. Whether the two British graves can still be found there I don't know.

Nikolay,

Interesting post, why don't you post it in the War in the Air section and see what the experts come up with.

Hi Nikolay,

Good to hear from Bulgaria. As well as Kane (there is some correspondence relating to his death at the Imperial War Museum, I think in the Minchin or McKewan Papers), his pilot was Lt David Liddell Graham. He is buried in Karasouli next to Kane (Row D Grave 958). He was the son of Joshua and Agnes Liddell Graham, of 219, Paisley Rd., Glasgow. Native of Johnstone, Renfrewshire. I think I have a photo somewhere of the grave, but am having difficulty finding it. I thin alan Wakefield took one form me in September digitally (my camara broke) - I will check.

All the best
