GWAG

Hello to you all,
After reading several postings on this forum I thought you all may be interested in the activities of The Great War Archaeology Group (GWAG), led by Dr Neil Faulkner.
The basic aims of GWAG are the study and preservation of Great War archaeological remains both in the UK and abroad.
We have already undertaken fieldwork in the UK, France and Southern Jordan. Some of the work in the UK was filmed for the new series of 'Timewatch' (BBC2) which will be broadcast in January 2007.
We are currently looking at Great War searchlight positions and AA gun positions around London and would welcome any thoughts, views or reports on such remains. We would also welcome any views on any topics relating to Great War remains, especially those under threat.
The website is slightly out of date at present, but is at www.gwag.org
Thank you and best wishes,
David Charles Hibbitt PIFA

re: AA WWI defences
You will no doubt be aware of the recent survey of Lodge Hill AA battery by EH's Archaeological Survey and Investigation team, the results of which have been reported in EH's 'Research News' bulletin (No.3, Spring 2006).

Hi,
As a youngster back in the 1940's I lived in Perivale,Greenford, NW Middlesex near Horsenden Hill, where on top were concrete squares which we understood to be the remains of a searchlight site from the Great War as it was always called then. It's just north of the A40 just past the A4127.

Thank you for this infomation. Do you have a grid reference at all? We have a man who could go and have a look.
Best wishes,

All
Lodge Hill is on MOD land and I am in discussions with a bunch of people about it as part of my day job as archaeologist in the MOD. Anyone wanting to undertake fieldwork there should address research requests through me!
Where have GWAG been working in France? I was hearing interesting tales of Jordan!

Sorry I don,t have a map ref.,but Horsenden Hill is a public open space about three quarters of a mile north of Perivale station on the central line and is reached from Horsenden Lane North. The concrete blocks were still there in the 1980's.Would be interested to know if they still are.
All the Best,
Les
