I have 41282 Private Edgar Buxton buried Philosophe British cemetery, Mazingarbe -
The CWGC has 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment).
He was actually in the 9th Battalion. The 17th Bn ceased to exist in January 1918 and men were moved to 9th Bn. Edgar is on the 9th Medal Rolls as 17th and then 9th Battalion.
He was killed on 27 April 1918 when the Germans shelled the trenches, exploding nine British Gas cyclinders and causing 30 casualties. 14 of these men died and are buried in graves III. D.1 to III. D. 14.
Edgar is buried in grave III.D.2.
Is it possible to change the database to put him as 9th Bn and not 17th please.

CWGC will, of course, amend their information if you can offer satisfactory proof. I had one similar to yours about 12 months back - in that case, IIRC, it was a battalion that never left the UK that they had listed for an overseas death.

I will check for you to see if it is a typo not needing the proof.

CWGC only reproduce the info given to them by the military (not always up to date!) and so they have to have documentary evidence before they can change the details.

The 1924 register gives 17 Bn and so it is not a recent typo. If all CWGC documents have that number, then you will have to provide the proof.

Many Thanks. Would the fact that he is buried amongst another 14 men from the 9th Bn who died on that day be proof. Also that the 17th Bn did not exist? I also have the war diaries detailing the incident and mention in Jan of men moving from the 17th Bn. Or would I have to get his death cert in the hope it had 9th Bn?
