NOT FORGOTTEN

All the above are the result of research by John Morcombe and horatio2 with a little input from myself in some cases.

Some detail on these men:

Chatham/17498, Private Arthur JENKINS, RMLI - 6th RM Battalion.
JENKINS died in RM operations against the Bolsheviks in Russia. His place of burial is not known.

Chatham/17711, Private Herbert DAVEY, RMLI - 6th RM Battalion.
Davey also died in RM operations in Russia. His place of burial is not known.

An extract from the 2000 history of the Royal Marines by General Julian Thompson was also included with these two cases. This book records the RMLI attack on Koikori in Russia on 8 September 1919 and specifically mentions Private Jenkins on page 211. Jenkins companion was wounded and captured in the attack and it is likely that Jenkins was mortally wounded at the same time. Private Davey’s death is recorded on page 212 in a direct quotation from an Officer, Lt PR Smith-Hill, RMLI. Davey was Smith-Hill’s servant.

Plymouth/16793, Private Thomas LACEY, RMLI - Plymouth Battalion, RND.
LACEY enlisted at Bristol 7 August 1914. He served in Plymouth Bn. at Dunkirk 19 Sep to 12 Oct 1914 and MEF from 6 Feb 1915 until killed in action at Gallipoli on 9 Jun 1915.

R/3758 (later PZ/2750), Able Seaman John BYRNE, RNVR. Late of Howe and 1st RM Battalions, Royal Naval Division.
BYRNE served in Howe Battalion in the BEF between November 1917 and February 1918, after which he was attached to 1st RM Battalion. He was severely gassed in April 1918 and invalided to UK. In November 1918 he was transferred from the RND to RN Depot Devonport (where his service number was changed to PZ/2750). He was discharged invalided for “gassing effects” on 2 April 1919 and died less than two weeks later on 15 April 1919. His death certificate shows the causes of death as “(1) Nephritis, 3 months (2) Exhaustion”. The three months of nephritis (i.e. since January 1919) reported on his Death Certificate (almost certainly related to the gassing) pre-dated his invaliding by at least ten weeks and he must have been suffering from this at the date of invaliding.
