I am tracing the history of a grandfather who retired as a Goastguard man in perhaps 1949.

Sydney Rouse was born in Bawdsey (Norfolk) 1885 joining the Navy in 1904 as a 'Stoker' although I understand that this was a rank and not perhaps an occupation.

He is listed - and my thanks to Tony Ellis - on 1 April 1926 at Kingston on Sea (Shoreham) when he was earning 30 shillngs a week with a G.J Firth as this was a two man station.
1932 and he is still at Kingston and in 1934.
On 21 April 1936 he is listed as being promoted to Station Officer at the Eastbourne Station eventually retiring in perhaps 1949.

I understand that the Coastguard has had many 'owners' starting with the Navy and this may be why the records are so wildy scattered.

Any information of the Coastguard makeup in the 20' and 30's would be of great help as would any knowledge of Sydney Rouse.

Regards

Jon

Hello Jon,
Try getting a copy of COASTGUARD! AN OFFICIAL HISTORY OF HM COASTGUARD by William Webb, published by Her Majesty`s Stationary Office in 1976 [ISBN 0 11 510675 8]. It is a good general history from their beginnings right up to the 1970s. If not still in print there are various book search companies on line you can try for a secondhand copy.
