Hello JPG,
These are the Admiralty death records for most of your men, but I don't have relatives, addresses etc.
HARPER, LANCELOT L, O.S., J 15515 (Dev), PEGASUS H.M. Cruiser (3rd class), 20-Sep-14, SHIP LOSS
BUCKLEY, HARRY, O.S., SS 4136 (Po), BULWARK H.M. Battleship, 26-Nov-14, SHIP LOSS
BLOMEFIELD, THOMAS C.A., CDR, JUNO H.M. Cruiser (2nd class), 14-Aug-15, Persian Gulf DIED OF WOUNDS
BARKER, PHILIP A., A/E.R.A. 4c, M 2596 (Po), BLACK PRINCE H.M. Armoured cruiser, 31-May-16, SHIP LOSS
SMITH, CECIL G., STOKER 1c, K 4312 (Po), TIPPERARY H.M. Destroyer, 01-Jun-16, SHIP LOSS
STANLEY, WILLIAM J.J., DECK HAND, Mercantile Marine Reserve, no number listed, IOLAIRE H.M. Yacht (hired), 01-Jan-19, SHIP LOSS
From the Tower Hill list of missing MERCHANT seamen (not NAVY):
TAYLOR, JOHN THOMAS, Chief Engineer, Mercantile Marine, MERCIA (Grimsby) Steam Trawler, 20-Mar-15, 50, Presumed drowned, Son of Thomas Taylor of Netherstown, Lichfield, Staffs, and the late Ann Taylor. Born at York.
There are a total of 9 names listed.
Welchman, Eliot 1916 15.7 63 Surgeon
HMT Briton
Born Lichfield Parents Charles and Charlotte Wife Caroline
There is something wrong with this inscription.
I can't find a record for an Eliot Welchman, either under Welchman or Eliot.
HMT BRITON was lost on 21/7/15, which is 12 months before his given date of death.
An armed trawler would not have had a surgeon as a member of the crew.
It is possible that he had been discharged from the navy, due to illness or accident, and died later out of the service.
Best wishes

I'd be interested to if Patrick Welshman is on the memorial as he's a man I've been researching for a while
His father I have as Dr Eliot William Welshman and the address I have (from Patrick's school records) is 61 Primrose Gardens in Battersea. I'm guessing this would be for around 1908 when Patrick entered the school

Hi Hambo,
Patrick Eliot Welchman who was born in Lichfield on 17 March 1895 is on two memorials in Lichfield. The main one beside the Minster Pool and his school from 1903.
I know he studied at Kings School in Canterbury. Is this school records you have mentioned?

JPG beat me to it.
I ventured out to Lichfield today to, terrible place for parking, to have a look at the Lichfield war memorial, and as JPG says Patrick Welchman is on that memorial. His father Eliot is also listed on the memorial.
I took a few snaps, with my phone, of the memorial and record cards if you are interested, however the qality is not so good. Im sure JPG will have better quality shots.

One thing I do know is that Tynemouth is not in the Red sea. So Briton must be wrong on two counts. Any ideas of any transports lost in the Med 15/6/1916 ?
What was the Independent Air Force?
All this info was submitted by Eliots wife.

Only merchant ship reported lost on 15th Jul 1916 was SYLVIE, 1302grt, a bit small, but lost in the Mediteranean.
However nothing is to say that any ship he may have been on was lost on that day.
Ooops, should be looking for Red Sea not Med.

From "THE TERRITORIAL FORCE IN STAFFORDSHIRE 1908-1915" by ANDREW THORNTON
Patrick Eliot Welchman joined the 2nd North Midland Field Company, Royal Engineers as a Second-Lieutenant in March 1913. The son a Surgeon and former Mayor of Lichfield, he had been a member of the Officer Training Corps at the King's School in Canterbury and at the time he was commissioned was employed at Lloyds Bank at Lichfield.

WELCHMAN PATRICK ELIOT LIEUT RE MC AWARD 1915
So if Eliot was a past Mayor of Lichfield, (explains why both names were accepted for the memorial months after closure date) then he should have an obituary in the Lichfield Mercury.
Patrick will be commemerated with LLoyds Bank no doubt, on the LLoyds Bank War Memorial and in "Lloyds Bank Memorial Album 1914-1919"
Maybe RFlory can find his entry, as he has done with other LLoyds men.

Both entries for the Welchman's were inscribed between October 1920 and 1926. At the moment I have been unable to verify the actual date, but the increase was by ten names overall and I believe in stages.
Patrick is recorded within the Lloyds Book and a memorial of the bank, but not in the local paper.
His father had a very long obituary in the Lichfield Mercury, but no mention of a ship. However, when he left the city he left to work for the Union Castle Line as a medical officer. I have not followed this up as yet.

Does the obituary of Eliot in the Lichfield Mercury state cause of death or place of death, which would be normal.
The simple request, I take it, is for confirmation or not of info on Stanley. Is the info David provided on W.J.J.Stanley what you were looking for. I take it that you are sure Stanley was a naval man and married Nora Johnson

Hi, the cause of death was given as heat apoplexy and though a full and descriptive obituary was recorded, the place of death was only stated as the Red Sea.
I have found the original request from Nora Johnson and that is all the information available so far. It said 1918 aged 38 and tried to locate hime via the census records. I can find no reason to attach him to Lichfield, though this is probably the same for many memorials that people are researching

Unfortunately the information about an armed trawler is a red herring. His Majesty's Transport Briton could be the ship pictured below. If Welchman was a civillian surgeon, he probably would not be recorded on CWGC. Have you tried tracing him in the
Medical Directory?

If Stanley, J.J is STANLEY, WILLIAM J.J., then unfortunately there is not much at Kew to help, service records for the Mercantile Marine Reserve have not been found. The alphabetical medal roll in ADM 171/132 (Mercantile Marine Reserve: Ratings Meb-War) will say which next of kin the medals were issued to but only an abreviation for 'widow, 'father' etc; not a name or address.
Next of Kin is unlikely to be listed in: ADM 116/1869 H.M.Y. IOLAIRE - Sinking-Court of Enquiry

Thanks for the information and the picture of the ship. How wonderful to locate an image.
The next time I visit the record office I will locate his obituary. It does mention his earlier war escapade in August 1914 when the ship he was working on was commandered by the Germans. He left the city circa 1911 after serving for many years.
I will follow up the rest of your advice as well

John.
The Welchman Family have quite a bit of History, and links to Chator's too. I will have to go and look at that Obituary. The two (possibly there was a third) siblings of Patrick, both changed their names by deed pole to use William's Carolines maiden name, Livingston. Something must have prompted both brother and Sister to change names in WWII. The only other Welchman that comes to mind is Gordon of Hut 6 fame, but I don't see any links there.
William Elliot does show up on the Medical register, but thanks to now being limited to use of ancestry for 1/2 hour per day at Warwickshire libraries, I have not managed to get far enough to check this out.
Click to view attachmentAs For Stanley..
Your info says the original request indicated he was aged 38. I take it you got from the War memorial index cards in the records office as shown above for William Eliot Welchman. On the cards I have read, no age is given, although some cards are accompanied by notes from informants. I take it that this is where the age came from.
I have not yet linked any 38 JJ Stanley to Norah Johnson.
However here is a Lichfield Link.
Marriages Sep 1901
Johnson, Thomas, Lichfield, 6b 840
Stanley, Norah Kathleen, Lichfield, 6b 840
I suspect, as you don't show a service number or vessel, that JJ Stanley may be this JJ Stanley:-
Births Dec 1896
Stanley, John Joseph, Lichfield, 6b 489
Whether Norah was previously married or anything else about her I have no Idea. As you say nothing is showing up on C1911.

Seems like a lot has been going on since I last checked this post!
Yes the information I have comes from the school register largely. I have a photo and decent bio of Patrick including his citations so if you'd like a copy send me a PM. I'm away for a couple of weeks so don't expect it too soon!
I would love to know the name of the school he went to before King's if you wouldn't mind passing that on I'd be very grateful. If you knew the years he went there that would be even better
Thanks to everyone for the extra info. The school will be adding a new section to it's website later this year which will carry Patrick's details, I'll make sure i post a link here when it's complete

Thanks Alan for the extra bit on information on Stanley. I hope to work with this now.
I have used the LRO for the starting point on my research and he was one that seemed to have no link. The address of Deans Croft and the lady named Nora came from the record office on a separate sheet of data in 2006 within the records.
What is also unusual in the address. That was within the parish of St Michaels and he is not on that memorial either. I have tried to link the age to the freebmd and census but was struggling and have only recorded brief data on him
What does "Chators" mean on the Welchman connection? His obitaury is 28.7.16 and he went to the Grammar School between 1863/68. I have a list of the "old boys" from a document produced in 1915/16. On this list is also two other welchmans who I think would be brothers. I have a copy of the booklet produced with the two names and the mention of "HMT Briton"....would you like a copy?
The family were established in Bore street from the early 1850's and moved into other streets as well. As a bit of interest one of the other men on the memorial, and not city born lived with the family in the early 1900s.

Hi Hambo, and thanks for the reply
As I mentioned in my email to Alan, information about his school came from the booklet produced in 1916 and mentions him attending Lichfield Grammar School like this "1903-11-12". To me this implies that he came back to the city in 1911 to finish his education?
I can send a copy for you as well.
Thanks for the offer of your information. Is the name recorded on the memorial at canterbury.
I have researched the school memorial and have a poor scan from a book. In real, it is located on a high part of a classroom wall....difficult to get close to, let along photograph.
I will add all the detail I have been able to find so far which has been built from various locations so someone you might know already.

Thanks for the reply
It is entirely possible that he came back to Litchfield after King's although he is recorded as having left King's in December 1911 which would have made him 16. His arrival at the school when he was 13 in September 1908 would been the age most boys arrived unless thay'd been at the Junior School.
He is listed on the school memorial which is at Mint Yard in the school precints where the men are listed by the year they left the school.
I will send you a link to the memorial website as soon as it's finished (soon!)
Dick Flory has posted his photo under classic threads/school registers. I have another one of him with his observers wings
Best regards John
