IN MEMORY OF THE "QUARRY BOYS" OF PENMAENMAWR TROOP, 6TH BATTALION ROYAL WELCH FUSILIERS WHO LANDED AT LALA BABA ON THE 9TH AUGUST 1915 AND WENT INTO ACTION THE FOLLOWING DAY.
OF THE 62 NAMES ON OUR LOCAL WAR MEMORIAL, NEARLY A QUARTER LOST THIER LIVES ON THE 10TH AUGUST OR SHORTLY AFTER - INCLUDING MAJOR AUGUSTUS WHEELER, THE QUARRY MANAGER AND PRIVATE E.O. DOWELL, THE YOUNGEST TO FALL AGED ONLY 18.
THEY LIE A LONG WAY FROM THEIR MOUNTAIN HOME.

The 10th August was a bad day for the RWF Terriers. Like Penmaenmawr, it was Abergele's blackest day of the entire war.

To the memory of the men of the 5th, 6th and 7th Royal Welsh Fusiliers who were killed in action during the attack on Scimitar and Green Hills on 10 August 1915.
Amongst those from the Penmaenmawr and the 6th RWF were:
Private Edward Oswald Dowell, aged 19
Lance Serjeant John Thomas
Major Augustus Wheeler
Lance Corporal Robert William Williams aged 24 and his brother Private Richard Ellis Williams, age 20, who died of wounds the following day
Private William Hugh Williams, aged 20
From the 5th RWF they included their commanding officer Lieut Colonel Basil Edwin Phillips from Rhual, Mold, Flintshire
From the 7th RWF they included Captain Edward Wynne Lloyd Jones of Vronhaul, Llandinam, Mont. and Captain Basil Herbert Edwards Beadon
I had the privilege of visiting Gallipoli earlier this year and paid my respects at both the Helles Memorial were many of them are commemorated and at Green Hill Cemetery
