Sappers get everywhere
On a recent visit to Vaulx Hill Cemetery I noticed that the surname on my Great Granddads headstone was spelt ATKIN and not ATKINS. I recently contacted the CWGC and they changed the details on their website as this was also incorrect. Does anyone know how long it will take to get the headstone corrected?

I believe it will be put on their list of work to do. Then re-etched.
No doubt Terry D will have the gen though.

It is difficult to answer.

It could be amended as a 'one-off' when it will be fitted into an appropriate schedule of works - anything up to a year or so. However, it could also await replacement of the headstone - many years.

Your best course is to email the France Area Office and ask. They should be able to tell you if it is currently scheduled for amendment in the near future.

I think unless it's in need of replacement it will be reingraved.

I flagged up two misspelt names on headstones in Tank Cemetery, Guemappe and Woods Cemetery, Ieper to the CWGC last November. They were kind enough to write to me and attach photos of the corrections. This took around five months.

The headstones were not replaced totally.

Thanks everyone,

I was hoping it would be corrected for my next visit next year but if it's not then thats not a problem.

Tim
