NOT FORGOTTEN

Eight of the above were put forward on behalf of member, John Morcombe. Godfrey and Harrison were put forward by member, horatio2. All were post-discharge cases and took two or three years for the MoD/RN to determine.

I don’t know who discovered Boyce.
John Hartley
Good news all round.

Are Godfrey & Harrison the two cases submitted by H2 that were originally rejected?

John
Terry Denham
No. They are 'first timers'.

Godfrey was invalided home the from BEF from Nelson Battalion RND with skull fractures caused by shrapnel. He was invalided out in October 1918 and died six months later at home in Swansea.

Able Seaman John HARRISON
R/5310 Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve
Died 03.01.20 Age 28
Commemoration: Brookwood (United Kingdom 1914-1918) Memorial, Surrey, UK

After service with Nelson Battalion RND in France, Harrison was invalided out in June 1918 with pulmonary TB attributable to service. He died of TB at home in Leeds in January 1920.

Place of burial for these men is not known.

Neither had been rejected previously but their names were submitted in February 2004 - Tempus Fugit.
Siege Gunner
Good to hear that these men will now be commemorated, and congratulations to the Pals who advocated their cases. It's a pity their burial places evidently could not be traced, but if they were found in the future, they would presumably then be marked with a CWGC headstone and the man's name be removed from the Brookwood Memorial.
Terry Denham
If the graves are ever located, their place of commemoration would be moved to the grave site. One from the Memorial was so moved only a couple of weeks ago.

Whether they would get a CWGC stone would depend on whether there was a private memorial in place or not.

Note that this is the Brookwood (United Kingdom 1914-1918) Memorial and not the Brookwood Memorial (a separate WW2 memorial).

Grave found

DANYGRAIG CEMETERY     GRAVE NO: 584 Section T
Siege Gunner
Good news, Chris, as with other recent IFTCs whose graves have now been found. When men are accepted, but their graves cannot be located, I wonder if there's a case for not adding their names permanently to the memorial at Brookwood for a period of time, to allow researchers to continue looking. Alternatively, rather than physically removing names from Brookwood when graves are located, perhaps a symbol could be added after the name to indicate that the man's grave has since been found.

Mick

As I understand things, when CWGC accepts the "found grave", it examines the burial site to see if a headstone is required or if it's a family grave that they just take over maintenance of. There's obviously a manufacturing delay if a headstone is needed. At some point in this process, the Commission amends it's online datatbase entry for the man to reflect the burial. At some much later point still, I believe (but am not certain) the man's name is removed from Brookwood. In any event, there could be a considerable delay as removal wouldnt normally take place until the panel was ready for replacement.

What a lovely long list! Superb work, my sincere respects to all those who made this possible.

Well done to all involved.

Can't help you with who found his grave but I find this case intriging as he's buried just down the road from me & I know George street in Fenny well. I'll have a pop into the cemetery next time I'm passing to see if he has a grave stone.

Just as a matter of interest Lawrence Bird doesn't appear on any of the local war memorials.

Well given Terry's final comment on the thread, I'm pretty sure Lawrence must have a grave marker as no new CWGC headstones have been errected in the cemetery in the last couple of years. (Unless of course it takes longer than two years to process)
