Anyone know what the crest for HMS Shark was? (I'm talking about Loftus Jones destroyer, lost at Jutland.)

No crest shown in A Companion to the Royal Navy.

I think I might have a silk at home with the HMS Shark crest - will try and dig it out tonight as long as it is where I think it is. A relative of mine was picked up but died from wounds sustained in the great Shark dash at Jutland - Chief Stoker Francis Newcombe.

I have a photo of his stone (C Stoker Newcombe)and somewhere his funeral which was a large affair, if you want it.

Jesse - the crest shown is an ancent style ship with sail - similar to viking but probably ancient Greece or Phoenician or something. Will try and scan later and attach or as I am not the greatest with technology scan and send to you by email if you PM me your address.

Thanks for the description, Jonathan. I hope you can post the image. My Brother-in Law's Gt. Grandfather was one of those killed on the 'Shark'. AB Stoker Thomas Singleton.

Thanks everyone. Jon, you can send to shivrme@hotmail.com. I had reference to the crest of a Unicorn, with mermaid tail, but this may be the S-Class HMS Shark that came out in 1916.

In that case Chief Stoker Newcombe and AB Stoker Singleton almost certainly were aware of each others existence.




Will try and scan and send to you tomorrow. This crest is marked Torpedo Boat Destroyer 935 Tons. Therefore there is no doubt this relates to the HMS Shark we are discussing.

Thanks Birch. I did see a reference just the other day mentioning the standardization of badges only after the war had ended, when certain shape badges were appropriate for certain classes of ships only. Apparently, prior to that skippers and crews were following no guidelines whatever, and could put forth any creation they desired. The larger ships did seem to have a slightly more formal system in place though, as I have seen through mail with ship's letterhead.
