Does anyone know if a hitory of this unit has been written? I am trying to research Captain R J McKay DSO, MBE, MC, who joined the regiment on 7th March 1917, having been severely wounded at High Wood whilst winning his DSO.

Captain McKay died 27th October 1921 at Coomassie of Blackwater Fever.

Any help/information would be most welcome as service in West Africa is way out my normal sphere of interest.

The Gold Coast regiment went into the Royal West African Frontier Force, of which a History was penned in the 60's.

Look for a copy of: "The Gold Coast Regiment in the East African Campaign" by Sir Hugh Clifford, published by John Murray in 1920.

and

"The History of the Royal West African Frontier Force" by Colonel A. Haywood & Brigadier F.A.S. Clarke, published by Gale & Polden in 1964.

you can buy a good reprint copy of Clifford's book from Battery Press for around 25 pounds plus postage, see:
