Our church war memorial plaque has the name of this officer and I have found that he died on 3 Dec 1916 and was buried at Catterick cemetery. He was previously in the Northamptonshire Regiment.
Has any aviation expert got information about a possible flying accident?

2Lt K Thornely* (formerly Northamptonshire Regiment) was the observer in BE 2d 5837 of No 53 Sqn RFC, flown by Capt Harold North Steward (formerly 6th Cavalry, Indian Army), when they were killed in a flying accident on 3 December 1916. No 53 Sqn was then based at Catterick.
* = that's the spelling in Airmen Died.
I hope that this is useful.

This forum is never-failing - or nearly never! Many thanks for the information. I note the spelling - the WW1 and WW2 records were badly compiled by those i/c here then and it is much too late to correct carved lettering.
