Glyn,

Yes, it's its name. A lighter is a barge. The Royal Navy ordered 225 mororized lighters during the war as landing craft. These were designated X 1 - X 225. X1 - X200 were 105 feet, 6 inches long, with a beam of 21 feet and a displacement of 160 tons.

The RN also ordered 90 Y-lighters.

Best wishes,
Michael

X6 as well as X110 were being towed by H M Tug DESIRE when they were confronted by a German U Boot 2.5 miles off Filey. She sank the Tug with gunfire and layed bombs on the two lighters.

There were quite a few casualties and a P.O. Redman of X110 won the DSM.

Interestingly those "Admiralty Civilians" who were lost received only the British War Medal, despite having given their lives for their country.
