Questions/help concerning RAF Muster Rolls.

Am trying to gather more info on my grandfather who served in the RFC/RAF, and from an earlier thread the muster rolls were mentioned. Firstly, do the rolls have any detailed info on them?

Are the rolls in service No order or alphabetical, or just random?

Was looking on the NA site to locate them but theres quite a lot to chose from e.g, Air10/233/34/36/37 etc. Where would be the best place to start?

Should have mentioned at the start that am very much a novice with research!

The details are in columns as follows
Air Force No
Name (surname, initials)
RNAS or RFC Trade Classification
Remustered to Air Force Trade Classification
RNAS rating or RFC rank or appointment
New rank in Air Force
Date of Joining (actually date of last change e.g promotion etc)
Normal rate Air Force Pay
Terms of enlistment (DW duration of war OE other engagement)

Therefore it is necessary to know the man's service number
Numbers below 200,000 are ex RFC and numbers from 200,001 to 255,000 are ex RNAS
RNAS men can be found by name online at NA under ADM188. most RNAS men have numbers with prefix F

The Fleet Air Arm Museum holds a copy of the complete muster list in two bound volumes.

Many thanks for that info. it looks as though it is worth me pursuing.

You said in your reply that the service numbers below 200,000 are ex RFC, my g.fathers was 47531, would you happen to know which Admin or Air section this would come under? as I intend ordering it from the NA so need to cut down the possibilities.
