Trying to understand how the Divisional Area's worked. Anybody have any recommendations to better understand the structure of the Indian Army in 1915 and 1916 ?

My assumption would be that the system was similar to the British. The Area (Lahore) controlled a number of units in peace-time which, on mobilisation, would assemble into a Field Division.

Aldershot Command in UK is an example: lots of battalions, batteries, etc, under command of the District, and on war, mobilised into 1st and 2nd Divisions.

The Area Commander would be the designated commander for the Division. Might be worth a look at Corrigan's Sepoys in the Trenches

Looking at the History of the 2nd Lancers, it seems some units were assigned for Mobilisation, whereas others were assigned to Internal Security (the 2nd were such, but were mobilised and despatched to France). Brigades were named after the Station the regiment was based at, or where the HQ was based - hence the 2nd joined the Jubbulpur Brigade.

Does that help?
