I'll be at Sailly-Saillisel and Epehy cemeteries in June. I won't have a huge amount of time, unfortunately, but if anyone wants a picture or pictures of individual headstones, or the cemeteries themselves, let me know and I'll do my best to oblige. My connection with Sailly-Saillisel is my grandfather; a stretcher-bearer with 63rd Field Ambulance, he was one of a team assigned to recovery of and reburial of bodies in the (then new) cemetery at S-S after the Armistice. >>Weblink<<

Concentration and clearance was normally carried out by Labour Companies. Did your GF transfer from RAMC and if so do you know to which Labour Company

emmcee,

I would be interested in some views of the cemeteries at some point.

Do you have a lot about your Grandfathers service. I have a section on my website about 21st division called 'Fighting Soldiers' and I am always on the lookout for articles to put there.

Have a good time.

Thank you both for your replies.

Peter: I'm only just starting out on this process and finding several "disconnects" between what might be called family legend, and what seems to be the reality. I've never heard Labour Companies mentioned in context of his service, but there's the definite story of Sailly-Saillisel. I have very little to go on; a (good quality, high-res scan) picture of GF as a member of a football team (with the names of the team members, if they're of use to anyone's researches - I'd wondered about BJay's database) and a paperknife he made from a piece of copper (according to family legend, from a binding strap on a large packing crate) on which he's dot-punched locations at which he served.

armourersergeant: Happy to send some pictures. I'll go have a look at your website. many thanks for the link.
