Avoiding Conscription in South Africa

Recommended Posts

Carnkie

One of my grandfathers went to South Africa in 1912.  He was 25 years old.

He married in 1917 and finally returned home to the UK in July 1919.  How did he manage to avoided being called up while he was in Grahamstown?

Thanks for any help.

He didnt "avoid" being called up - South Africa didnt have conscription.

I did not mean avoid in a disparaging way but he was English and only gone out for employment.  I wonder if he was under South African jurisdiction or if the authorities were not interested in calling back these people.  Perhaps being a part time teacher put him in a reserved occupation.

Any thoughts?
