Nieuport 16

Is there any way of confirming that 11 Squadron in mid 1916 was flying the Nieuport 16 rather than a '17' etc

Many thanks in advance,

Adam

Hi Adam,

A quick look indicates 11 Squadron has two Nieuport 17's - A200 and A201, which arrived right at the end of July/early August time.  The first mention of an 11 Squadron Nieuport 17 in The Sky Their Battlefield II is A201, with that remarkable man Albert Ball attacking enemy aircraft in it, on 16th August 1916.

Hope this helps.

Trevor

Just to follow up on Trevor's post, the first mention I have of a Nieuport 16 is A117, delivered to No 11 Sqn on 24 April 1916; Capt L A Pattinson claimed a "Type A" out of control on 30 April 1916.  The squadron's last claim on the type would appear to by Albert Ball on 2 July when he claimed an Aviatik two-seater while flying A134.

As far as I can tell, No 11 squadron claimed only four victories on the Nieuport 17, all by Ball between 16 and 22 August 1916 in A201 (which he took with him to No 60 Sqn).
