What does an announcement mean when it says 'Lt So-and-so to be Lt NEXT BELOW Lt Someone Else, May 23 1918'.  The chap in question was still a 2nd Lt when he died in August 1918. The notice was in the London Gazette in September 2, 1918, just over a week after he died, which could be a coincidence.

There was a nominal 'pecking order' for promotion based on seniority, this usually accounts for references such as this. Who was the man so we can look at the entry ?

He was 2nd Lt Cecil Ullyott of the 5th Battalion (the Cyclists Battalion) East Yorkshire Regiment. When he died he was attached to the 1st Battalion. I am trying to find out when he went overseas - the 5th Battalion was patrolling the East Coast for the duration of the war. He had been with the 1st Battalion since June - according to the Gazette).

All his family know is that Cecil's cousin, who was also on active service on the Somme, biked to see him on the 24th August but he had been killed the night before, which is poignant.

Re 2nd Lt Ullyott's attachment to the 1st Ben. I got this information from the 1st Battalion, EYR, war diary, of which I have a copy, if anyone wants one.

Edit  C Ullyott next below below D.C.Wardlow 23rd May 1918   L/G 2nd Sept 1918

Just a delay in his promotion being announced in the L/G

(there was a war on)

He was a Lt when he died not a 2nd Lieut
