Minor changes to the Forum   12/12/17

We have altered the structure of the Home Fronts and Uniforms, Arms, Insignia, Equipment & Medals boards. We have removed the sub-category headings and now each board is more visible and easier to find. We have also renamed "About this website" and "Using theTechnology" to make it clearer where to post questions about the GWF website. We have also put a link ot the forum Rules on the main menu at the top to make them easier to find - particularly the section regarding requesting look ups on subscription sites such as Ancestry. Finally, for those who visit Skindles, there is a pinned post there detailing some changes to it.   Regards The GWF Admin Team

Engineer marksmen

I believe that the RE shot the full musketry course, which implies that they were eligible to wear the marksman crossed rifles if so qualified.

Please do any members have photos of RE thus badged?

I had one "somehere" but .................

Good spot sir: how about:

leather?

naturally tarnished brass, as per allowed on active service?

The cap badges certainly look RE.

Does GWF1967 kindly have a title or provenance or whatever for RE please?

Gunner Bailey

My Grandfather was a sapper and his Company war diary has many entries regarding musketry practice whilst in France. Certainly on a number of occasions he fought side by side with the infantry. The old saying 'soldiers first engineers second' was true.

It has R.E. written on the back and the badges look R.E until I got to the chap in the doorway.  How about Rifle Brigade?

Would a 1906 Lance Corporal in full dress do?

I have one with marksman's badge.

I think Rifle Bde has to be the answer, regretably.

Simmonds is a very nice capture with saddler trade in the bargain. Thank you.

I believe he is a 2nd corporal.

My apologies.

Any idea what the ribbon/tape around the cuff is?

Man third from left has a different cuff band.

From their apparent ages, unlikely to be runners.

Orderlies but scruffy to the extreme if so.

I think it is his cuffs (both) turned back because the jacket sleeves are too long for him.

This is a 12 year minimum man, you would think he could arrange a little time with the tailors!
