Railway Operating Division RE

I wonder if any RE or Railway experts out there can help me with this one.

I have a soldier's details that show he was with the RODRE, and it says "Unit 82 Company".

Can anyone confirm that this was indeed a RODRE unit? I know there was a 82 Field Company; and there is no war diary at PRO for an 82 Railway Company. So it's a bit of a mystery to me.

Any details of their role (construction, operating, etc) and locations would be very valuable. Thanks in advance.

Chris,

Not sure if this is the same unit, but the 11 Nov 18 Order of battle lists an 82 Coy as a Miscellaneous Trades Company (Broad Gauge) under transportation units.

Thanks Joe. Sounds like a pretty obscure unit, doesn't it!

Chris,

According to a publication by Norman Holding, titled 'World War I Ancestry', he states the following -

"..besides infantry, the British Army had many other types of unit..."

He then lists various types of units for July 1916 as follows -

Railway Companies , 2 units, Name of Corps ASC

Railway Supply Detachment, 73 units, Name of Corps ASC.

I am not sure if this is relevant to your research.

James O'Sullivan.
